Removing Kontera

Posted on: April 8, 2009 by Matt 3 Comments

I suppose the title says it all.  A few weeks ago I opted to give Kontera a shot and see how it worked out.  So far – I am not terribly impressed.  It is not so much that the total clicks were low (there were 2 registered) but more that I can not stand the number o f context links they put up.

Something about it just makes me feel like the site is dirty with Kontera running.  All the context links with all the little pop-ups on hover.  I just do not like it.  I suppose it is a personal preference but Kontera is just not for me.  So that is that – just a heads up and I am going to head out to remove my plugin now.

Selling Off A Guilty Pleasure With BuyMMOAccounts.com

Posted on: April 6, 2009 by Matt 1 Comment

I normally keep my own guilty pleasures fairly quiet but for a long time I enjoyed playing World Of Warcraft to pass the time.  I played the game for about two and a half years and finally started to drift from enjoying the game and found that I had largely lost interest.  A few months ago I closed my account and waved goodbye to the MMO scene.   I had not been playing much in the past 8 months or so as I had just been too busy with my girlfriend and the kids and I had no intention of continuing to pay for a service I was not using.

Instead of opting to leave my old characters sitting out there for eternity I opted to look into selling off my account which is when I stumbled onto BuyMMOAccounts.com.  The site allows people to buy and / or sell World Of Warcraft accounts as well as purchase World Of Warcraft game cards. The only service that I used was the selling of my account as I was no longer looking to play the game.

The process was pretty straight forward.  I submitted my character information and registered for an account.  Within the next day I received a quote for purchase of my account for $80 (it would have been about $30 higher but my account was inactive).  I then agreed to the sale, sent in the contract and confirmed that I was indeed who I said I was via a verification phone call.  The process took me the better part of a week but this is unusually long for their service.

My problem was that I had attempted to fax the contract back in but the fax machine on their end was not picking up.  After a couple of failed attempts I called in to customer service – which was very helpful – and was informed that both lines are tied to fax and phone.  Since I was having trouble with the listed fax number then I could try the main support phone number – this worked perfectly.

Upon receiving my contract the company then placed a verification phone call to the number I provided.  I missed the first call but they also emailed and said that they would like to try to call again and allowed me to set a time.  I spoke with support again the following day and within 15 minutes of wrapping up the phone call I had the $80 deposited to my PayPal account.  It all worked very smoothly!

All said and done – I was fairly impressed by how well the service worked for me and would definitely use BuyMMOAccounts.com again if I had another account to sell.

Giving Versus Selling

Posted on: March 18, 2009 by Matt 2 Comments

I have been thinking a lot lately about a couple of items I have kicking around the house that I no longer need.  For the most part they are smaller items that I could probably pop up on Ebay and get a few bucks for provided I wanted to spend the time to ship the items out.  However I do have a couple of gift cards that I know I will not use that were given to me as a gift.

I have considered a couple of options for these gift cards and it looks like it will come down to either selling them on Ebay (they would probably bring in about $25 or so each) or giving them away to somebody I know would use them.  I already have an idea of who I would give them to and I happen to know that each of the two people receiving them would really enjoy and appreciate them.

Normally giving the cards away would be a no brainer for me – if I am not going to use them then I might as well let somebody else enjoy them right?  However – given the current economic situation I am really tempted to sell them and use the extra cash to pay down a little more debt.  I find throughout the day that I bounce between planning on giving the cards away and selling them for my own profit. I am sure that me wanting to sell them is due to some selfish reasoning buried in there and I find that I really do not give away much to those less fortunate than I am. Maybe giving the cards away would be a step in the right direction?

So – I thought I would turn the question over to see what everyone else thinks.  What would you do?  Give away the freely given card to someone less fortunate or sell them off for personal gain?

Enough With The Economy Already

Posted on: March 10, 2009 by Matt 2 Comments

I think I have had enough with the news about the economy. The current economic crisis is all that the news media seems to cover these days with a little touch on other items. I understand that our economy is important news but I also believe that the daily reports of all the horrible economic events incites fear and encourages the current economic state.

I know there are probably a lot of people out there with a similar point of view but I think I need a short rant!  All we hear lately is scary news about the current economy, consumer confidence is at an all time low and that banks are failing.  Then the people we have elected to work these problems out spend time bickering or working their own agenda to hold up potential progress!!! Is it just me or is something fundamentally wrong here?  I could understand not wanting to endorse a program that you believe would not benefit the citizens of your district or that you strongly believe would be detrimental to the nation as a whole but obstruction for the sake of bringing down the other party’s approval numbers?  That is just irresponsible.

So now we are not only hearing about how bad the economy is but also about how our elected officials think their own plans to move forward are more important than the current needs of the country.  I really am starting to think that if America as a whole was to just turn off their television sets for a month we would probably start to see a turn around. The economic fear would start to dissipate for most consumers after a couple weeks and people would start to live their lives again.  Of course this is another “if a tree fell in the forest and nobody was there to hear it…” theories but you never know – it might work (if we could keep people from being bombarded by media that is).

Ok – there’s my rant for the week.  What do you think?  Are you as tired of all the economic and political news as I am?

Trying Out Today.com

Posted on: March 9, 2009 by Matt 2 Comments

I have been reading a lot lately on writing a blog over at Today.com to make a little extra income and have decided to give it a try.  I figured that I have a few other areas of interest and that I may be able to increase my online income by writing something at a bigger site.  So far the program over at Today.com looks fairly reasonable.  They offer payment for referrals, unique page views on your site and appear to have a pay per post program as well.  I am not familiar with how it works yet though.   The major drawbacks to using Today.com appear to be that you can not publish your own advertising.   All advertising is published and all revenue goes to Today.com so any bloggers with a high volume of traffic that are turning profits based on ads may not see an appeal.

I am a bit nervous about moving forward mostly because the topic I have chosen to write on leaves me feeling a little bit vulnerable.  We will have to wait and see how it all works out but I am hopeful that it will go well.
